Moderate magnitude 4.4 quake hits 21 km west of Hadano, Japan in the evening4.4 quake 24 Oct 9:30 pm (GMT +9) An intermediate to deep magnitude 4.4 earthquake was reported in the evening near Hadano, Hadano-shi, Kanagawa, Japan. According to the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, the quake hit on Tuesday, October 24th, 2023, at 9:30 pm local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 170 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Gotenba (pop. 83,800) located 10 km from the epicenter, Hadano (pop. 174,300) 21 km away, Odawara (pop. 203,000) 22 km away, Isehara (pop. 103,400) 28 km away, Hiratsuka (pop. 259,100) 32 km away, and Atsugi (pop. 229,200) 34 km away. In Zama (pop. 134,700, 37 km away), Chigasaki (pop. 231,700, 37 km away), Yokohama (pop. 3,574,400, 59 km away), and Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600, 70 km away), the quake was probably not felt. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
