Moderate tremor of magnitude 4.1 just reported 18 km west of Târgu Jiu, Romania 4.1 quake 10 Nov 7:48 pm (GMT +2) An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred early evening on Friday, November 10th, 2023, at 7:48 pm local time near Târgu Jiu, Municipiul Târgu Jiu, Gorj, Romania, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Romania's National Institute for Earth Physics (NIEP) at magnitude 4.3, and the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 3.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Hobița (pop. 310) located 0 km from the epicenter, and Peştişani (pop. 4,200) 3 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Tismana (pop. 7,800) located 7 km from the epicenter, Târgu Jiu (pop. 97,200) 18 km away, and Motru (pop. 22,300) 28 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lupeni (pop. 30,500) located 37 km from the epicenter, Vulcan (pop. 28,900) 40 km away, Petroşani (pop. 44,200) 47 km away, and Drobeta-Turnu Severin (pop. 102,300) 57 km away.
