Moderate magnitude 4.7 earthquake 96 km northwest of Chiang Mai, Thailand 4.7 quake 9 Nov 2:30 pm (GMT +7) A very shallow magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Chiang Mai, Thailand. According to Thailand's Earthquake Observation Division (TMD), the quake hit on Thursday, November 9th, 2023, at 2:30 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 2 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Pai (pop. 2,300) located 14 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Mae Hong Son (pop. 9,100) located 54 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Fang (pop. 7,600) located 94 km from the epicenter, Chiang Mai (pop. 127,200) 96 km away, San Kamphaeng (pop. 33,000) 109 km away, and Lamphun (pop. 43,200) 117 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
