Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.1 quake hits 51 km northwest of San Antonio de los Cobres, Argentina in the morning 5.1 quake 14 Dec 11:57 am (GMT -3) Argentina was shaken near San Antonio de los Cobres, Departamento de Los Andes, Salta, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 only 21 minutes ago, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 185.9 km beneath the epicenter near San Antonio de los Cobres, Departamento de Los Andes, Salta, Argentina, in the morning on Thursday, December 14th, 2023, at 11:57 am local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile at magnitude 5.1, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Antonio de los Cobres (pop. 4,000) located 51 km from the epicenter, and Santa Rosa de Tastil (pop. 2,000) 94 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
