Significant magnitude 5.7 earthquake 124 km west of New Aksu, China 5.7 quake 23 Jan 7:19 am (GMT +8) An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 occurred only 11 minutes ago 124 km west of New Aksu, China, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near New Aksu, Aksu Diqu, Xinjiang, China, in the morning on Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024, at 7:19 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.7. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Aykol (pop. 11,300) located 115 km from the epicenter, New Aksu (pop. 535,700) 124 km away, and Kyzyl-Suu (pop. 16,900) 142 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
