Small tremor of magnitude 3.1 reported 14 miles southwest of Tennant Creek, Northern Territory, Australia 3.1 quake Northern Territory, Australia, Feb 3, 2024 01:31 am (GMT +9:30) An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred early morning on Saturday, February 3rd, 2024, at 1:01 am local time near Tennant Creek, Barkly, Northern Territory, Australia, as reported by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 1.7 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tennant Creek (pop. 3,200) located 14 miles from the epicenter.
