Significant magnitude 5.1 quake hits 91 km southeast of Santiago, Panama in the morning 5.1 quake Panama Feb 6, 2024 08:37 am (GMT -5) A shallow magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported in the morning near Santiago, Santiago District, Provincia de Veraguas, Panama. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Tuesday, February 6th, 2024, at 8:37 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Tonosi (pop. 1,500) located 16 km from the epicenter, Llano de Piedra (pop. 1,100) 31 km away, Macaracas (pop. 2,200) 38 km away, and La Palma (pop. 1,300) 44 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Las Tablas (pop. 8,900) located 54 km from the epicenter, Los Santos (pop. 6,000) 63 km away, San Juan Bautista (pop. 11,800) 66 km away, and Santiago (pop. 45,400) 91 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
