Small magnitude 2.8 quake hits 31 km southeast of Valencia, France in the morning 2.8 quake 1 Mar 11:22 am (GMT +1) An earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred in the morning on Friday, March 1st, 2024, at 11:22 am local time near Valencia, Droma, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France, as reported by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.0 earthquake. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bouvante-le-Haut (pop. 240) located 8 km from the epicenter, and Die (pop. 4,900) 12 km away. In Crest (pop. 8,500, 24 km away), Romans-sur-Isère (pop. 35,000, 29 km away), Valencia (pop. 63,900, 31 km away), Bourg-lès-Valence (pop. 19,800, 32 km away), Echirolles (pop. 33,100, 48 km away), and Grenoble (pop. 158,600, 51 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
