Small magnitude 3.7 earthquake 17 km northwest of Argostoli, Greece 3.7 quake 4 Mar 9:18 pm (GMT +2) A very shallow magnitude 3.7 earthquake was reported in the evening near Argostoli, Kefallonia, Ionian Islands, Greece. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Monday, March 4th, 2024, at 9:18 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Athéras (pop. 170) located 5 km from the epicenter, Lixouri (pop. 3,800) 13 km away, and Argostoli (pop. 9,800) 17 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Valsamata (pop. 1000) located 24 km from the epicenter, Samos (pop. 1,300) 25 km away, Ithaki (pop. 1,800) 32 km away, Poros (pop. 1,100) 39 km away, and Lefkada (pop. 8,700) 66 km away. In Zakynthos (pop. 11,500, 74 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
