Moderate tremor of magnitude 4.4 just reported 4 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California, United States 4.4 quake 12 Aug 12:20 pm (GMT -7) The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in the United States near Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, only 7 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Monday, August 12th, 2024, at 12:20 pm local time at a shallow depth of 7.5 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In South Pasadena (pop. 26,200) located 3 miles from the epicenter, Alhambra (pop. 85,600) 3 miles away, Monterey Park (pop. 61,500) 4 miles away, Los Angeles (pop. 3,898,700) 4 miles away, East Los Angeles (pop. 126,500) 4 miles away, Pasadena (pop. 142,300) 5 miles away, and Glendale (pop. 201,000) 6 miles away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Monte (pop. 116,700) located 9 miles from the epicenter, and South Gate (pop. 96,400) 9 miles away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
