Moderate 4.3 quake hits near Neapolis, Kavala, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece 4.3 quake 12 Aug 4:39 pm (GMT +3) A magnitude 4.3 earthquake near Neapolis, Kavala, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece, was reported only 5 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Monday, August 12th, 2024, at 4:39 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Karyes (pop. 240) located 8 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Ouranoupoli (pop. 1000) located 16 km from the epicenter, Nea Roda (pop. 1,200) 23 km away, Ierissos (pop. 3,300) 27 km away, Sarti (pop. 1,200) 28 km away, Sykia (pop. 1,900) 35 km away, Neos Marmaras (pop. 3,200) 40 km away, and Nikiti (pop. 2,700) 43 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Neapolis (pop. 54,000) located 74 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
