OP Webmaster Launch Director Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 678,976 Los Angeles, USA	Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 43 km northwest of Crotone, Italy early afternoon 4.2 quake 12 Aug 3:22 pm (GMT +2) An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred early afternoon on Monday, August 12th, 2024, at 3:22 pm local time near Crotone, Provincia di Crotone, Calabria, Italy, as reported by The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 22 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Torretta (pop. 2,400) located 2 km from the epicenter, Cariati (pop. 8,300) 7 km away, Cirò Marina (pop. 14,800) 14 km away, San Giovanni in Fiore (pop. 17,400) 36 km away, and Rossano Stazione (pop. 23,800) 36 km away.
