Moderate 4.2 quake hits near Yerevan, Armenia 4.2 quake 12 Aug 2:02 am (GMT +4) An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred early morning on Monday, August 12th, 2024, at 2:02 am local time near Yerevan, Armenia, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Vardadzor (pop. 2,100) located 16 km from the epicenter, Gavarr (pop. 21,700) 24 km away, Abovyan (pop. 35,700) 34 km away, Charentsavan (pop. 18,500) 41 km away, and Yerevan (pop. 1,093,500) 42 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sevan (pop. 17,100) located 43 km from the epicenter, Ararat (pop. 28,800) 45 km away, Artashat (pop. 20,600) 45 km away, Tokhanshalu (pop. 18,900) 51 km away, and Vanadzor (pop. 101,100) 84 km away.
