Moderate magnitude 4.3 quake hits 34 km northeast of Lugoj, Romania late at night 4.3 quake 10 Aug 11:46 pm (GMT +3) A shallow magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported late at night near Lugoj, Municipiul Lugoj, Timis, Romania. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Saturday, August 10th, 2024, at 11:46 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Hungary's Seismological Observatory (Hungarian National Seismological Network) at magnitude 4.6, The Eötvös Loránd Research Network of the Kövesligethy Radó Seismological Observatory in Budapest, Hungary (ELRN) at magnitude 4.6, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.7. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Dubești (pop. 360) located 6 km from the epicenter, Birchiş (pop. 2,000) 7 km away, and Vărădia de Mureş (pop. 2,100) 7 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Savarsin (pop. 3,200) located 13 km from the epicenter, Lipova (pop. 11,000) 33 km away, and Lugoj (pop. 43,200) 34 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Arad (pop. 169,100) located 63 km from the epicenter, Deva (pop. 67,800) 64 km away, and Timisoara (pop. 315,100) 70 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
