Moderate 4.1 quake hits near Merredin, Western Australia, Australia4.1 quake Australia: Kellerberrin, WA, Aug 19, 2024 02:33 am (GMT +8) An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred early morning on Monday, August 19th, 2024, at 2:33 am local time near Merredin, Western Australia, Australia, as reported by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in South Yelbeni (pop. 29) located 8 miles from the epicenter, North Baandee (pop. 40) 12 miles away, Kununoppin (pop. 49) 13 miles away, Korrelocking (pop. 50) 19 miles away, and North Tammin (pop. 120) 22 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Wyalkatchem (pop. 400) located 25 miles from the epicenter, Kellerberrin (pop. 960) 26 miles away, Bencubbin (pop. 230) 31 miles away, Merredin (pop. 2,900) 32 miles away, and Cunderdin (pop. 890) 43 miles away.
