Small magnitude 3.4 quake hits 17 km southwest of Plovdiv, Bulgaria in the evening 3.4 quake 18 Aug 8:18 pm (GMT +3) Just 9 minutes ago, a 3.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Sunday, August 18th, 2024, at 8:18 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 4.8 km below the surface. The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Perushtitsa (pop. 5,400) located 6 km from the epicenter, Krichim (pop. 8,600) 13 km away, and Stamboliyski (pop. 12,100) 13 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Plovdiv (pop. 340,500) located 17 km from the epicenter, Asenovgrad (pop. 52,200) 20 km away, Peshtera (pop. 18,700) 27 km away, and Rakovski (pop. 15,800) 37 km away. In Parvomay (pop. 17,000, 49 km away), and Velingrad (pop. 24,000, 52 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
