Moderate magnitude 4.1 earthquake 27 km north of Kingston, Jamaica 4.1 quake 16 Aug 8:01 am (GMT -5) The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported a magnitude 4.1 quake in Jamaica near Kingston, only 17 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Friday, August 16th, 2024, at 8:01 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Richmond (pop. 2,000) located 5 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Annotto Bay (pop. 5,500) located 9 km from the epicenter, Port Maria (pop. 7,900) 15 km away, Constant Spring (pop. 12,800) 21 km away, Linstead (pop. 20,700) 23 km away, Half Way Tree (pop. 18,600) 25 km away, Kingston (pop. 937,700) 27 km away, Spanish Town (pop. 145,000) 30 km away, and Portmore (pop. 102,900) 32 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Old Harbour (pop. 26,000) located 43 km from the epicenter.
