5.5 quake 5 Sep 6:38 am (GMT -4)

An intermediate to deep magnitude 5.5 earthquake was reported early morning near Oruro, Bolivia.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Thursday, September 5th, 2024, at 6:38 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 232 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Challapata (pop. 8,000) located 68 km from the epicenter, Huanuni (pop. 15,500) 104 km away, Llallagua (pop. 28,100) 111 km away, and Oruro (pop. 208,700) 122 km away.
