Just 16 minutes ago, a 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Shepparton, Greater Shepparton, Victoria, Australia. The tremor was recorded late at night on Sunday, September 8th, 2024, at 11:56 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Strathbogie (pop. 280) located 2 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Euroa (pop. 3,200) located 14 miles from the epicenter, Mansfield (pop. 4,800) 22 miles away, Benalla (pop. 10,100) 23 miles away, and Alexandra (pop. 2,600) 24 miles away. In Kialla (pop. 6,600, 35 miles away), Shepparton (pop. 31,100, 39 miles away), Mooroopna (pop. 7,700, 40 miles away), and Wangaratta (pop. 17,900, 45 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
