Small magnitude 3.4 earthquake 33 km southwest of Preveza, Greece

An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 occurred in the morning on Saturday, September 14th, 2024, at 9:11 am local time near Preveza, Préveza, Epirus, Greece, as reported by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake. A third agency, The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Nikolis (pop. 40) located 1 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lefkada (pop. 8,700) located 18 km from the epicenter, Palairos (pop. 2,600) 27 km away, Kandila (pop. 1,200) 30 km away, Preveza (pop. 17,300) 33 km away, Vonitsa (pop. 4,700) 36 km away, and Ithaki (pop. 1,800) 37 km away. In Argostoli (pop. 9,800, 57 km away), and Arta (pop. 21,900, 62 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
