Small magnitude 3.5 quake hits 55 km southeast of Bern, Switzerland early evening 3.5 quake 26 Sep 7:38 pm (GMT +2) A magnitude 3.5 earthquake near Bern, Bern-Mittelland District, Switzerland, was reported only 4 minutes ago by the Swiss Seismological Service (SED), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 1.9 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Thursday, September 26th, 2024, at 7:38 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Lauterbrunnen (pop. 2,600) located 7 km from the epicenter, Interlaken (pop. 5,100) 16 km away, and Frutigen (pop. 6,700) 17 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Spiez (pop. 12,600) located 21 km from the epicenter, Thoune (pop. 42,100) 30 km away, Steffisburg (pop. 15,200) 32 km away, Sierre (pop. 15,800) 37 km away, and Köniz (pop. 37,200) 55 km away. In Bern (pop. 121,600, 55 km away), and Luzern (pop. 81,700, 66 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
