Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.9 reported 84 km southeast of Oran, Argentina 4.9 quake 14 Oct 12:48 pm (GMT -3) Just 39 minutes ago, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Oran, Departamento de Orán, Salta, Argentina. The tremor was recorded around noon on Monday, October 14th, 2024, at 12:48 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface. The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Palma Sola (pop. 5,300) located 27 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Yuto (pop. 7,700) located 48 km from the epicenter, Apolinario Saravia (pop. 8,600) 64 km away, Embarcacion (pop. 24,000) 72 km away, Libertador General San Martin (pop. 49,300) 73 km away, Fraile Pintado (pop. 13,700) 75 km away, Oran (pop. 74,100) 84 km away, and San Pedro de Jujuy (pop. 58,400) 91 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
