Small 2.9 quake hits near Mount Newman, East Pilbara, Western Australia, Australia 2.9 quake Australia: Newman, WA, Oct 17, 2024 03:24 pm (Perth time) An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 occurred only 30 minutes ago 4 miles southwest of Mount Newman, Western Australia, Australia, Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 miles beneath the epicenter near Mount Newman, East Pilbara, Western Australia, Australia, early afternoon on Thursday, October 17th, 2024, at 3:24 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9 as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mount Newman (pop. 12,300) located 4 miles from the epicenter.
