Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 36 miles south of Eureka, California, United States late at night4.2 quake 5 km S of Petrolia, CA, Oct 23, 2024 11:59 pm (Los Angeles time) Just 3 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Eureka, Humboldt County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded late at night on Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024, at 11:59 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 5.7 miles below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Scotia (pop. 850) located 16 miles from the epicenter, Rio Dell (pop. 3,400) 17 miles away, Ferndale (pop. 1,400) 20 miles away, and Fortuna (pop. 12,000) 23 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Humboldt Hill (pop. 3,400) located 31 miles from the epicenter, Eureka (pop. 27,000) 36 miles away, Bayside (pop. 17,100) 40 miles away, Arcata (pop. 17,800) 42 miles away, and McKinleyville (pop. 15,200) 47 miles away.
