Moderate magnitude 4.6 quake hits 48 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii, United States early morning 4.6 quake 5 Nov 1:42 am (GMT -10) Just 6 minutes ago, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA. The tremor was recorded early morning on Tuesday, November 5th, 2024, at 1:42 am local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 23 miles below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Pāhala (pop. 1,400) located 4 miles from the epicenter, Ocean View (pop. 4,400) 18 miles away, Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) 27 miles away, and Honaunau-Napoopoo (pop. 2,600) 31 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Holualoa (pop. 8,500) located 43 miles from the epicenter, Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400) 46 miles away, Hilo (pop. 43,300) 48 miles away, and Kalaoa (pop. 9,600) 50 miles away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
