Significant 5.5 quake hits near Iwaki, Iwaki-shi, Fukushima, Japan Japan was shaken near Iwaki, Iwaki-shi, Fukushima, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 only 8 minutes ago, Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 41.7 km beneath the epicenter near Iwaki, Iwaki-shi, Fukushima, Japan, early morning on Saturday, December 28th, 2024, at 4:10 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Namie (pop. 21,900) located 54 km from the epicenter, and Minami-Sōma (pop. 59,000) 62 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Iwaki (pop. 357,300) located 69 km from the epicenter, xiang ma (pop. 34,600) 77 km away, Funehikimachi-funehiki (pop. 23,500) 89 km away, Kitaibaraki (pop. 50,800) 95 km away, Fukushima (pop. 294,200) 108 km away, and Fukushima (pop. 294,200) 108 km away.
