Magnitude 3.2 earthquake strikes near Alcoy, Alicante, Valencia, Spain

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 3.2 quake in Spain near Alcoy, Alicante, Valencia, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Sunday, January 12th, 2025, at 1:24 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), which listed it as a magnitude 3.2 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Benilloba (pop. 880) located 1 km from the epicenter, and Alcoy (pop. 61,600) 8 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ibi (pop. 24,100) located 18 km from the epicenter, Ontinyent (pop. 37,700) 23 km away, Villajoyosa (pop. 33,800) 25 km away, Benidorm (pop. 71,000) 29 km away, and Gandia (pop. 80,000) 34 km away. In Alicante (pop. 334,800, 41 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
