Significant earthquake of magnitude 6.4 just reported 76 km southwest of Apatzingan, MexicoA magnitude 6.4 earthquake near Apatzingan, Apatzingán, Michoacan, Mexico, was reported only 9 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 91 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Sunday, January 12th, 2025, at 2:32 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Colombian Geological Service (SGC), which listed it as a magnitude 6.5 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 6.4, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 6.4. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Apatzingan (pop. 99,000) located 76 km from the epicenter, Colima (pop. 137,400) 88 km away, Tuxpan (pop. 27,500) 90 km away, Ciudad de Villa de Alvarez (pop. 117,600) 90 km away, Tecoman (pop. 85,700) 91 km away, Tamazula de Gordiano (pop. 18,800) 99 km away, and Zapotiltic (pop. 22,800) 99 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
