Webmaster Launch Director Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 678,977 Los Angeles, USA	Small magnitude 3.9 quake hits 9 miles southeast of Hawthorne, Nevada, United States early morning A very shallow magnitude 3.9 earthquake was reported early morning near Hawthorne, Mineral County, Nevada, USA. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Saturday, January 18th, 2025, at 2:20 am local time at a very shallow depth of 3.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.9 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.8. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Hawthorne (pop. 3,300) located 9 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Yerington (pop. 3,100) located 51 miles from the epicenter, and Smith Valley (pop. 1,600) 51 miles away. In Topaz Ranch Estates (pop. 1,500, 58 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
