Small magnitude 3.8 quake hits 42 miles northeast of Van Horn, Texas, United States in the afternoon

A very shallow magnitude 3.8 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Van Horn, Culberson County, Texas, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Friday, January 17th, 2025, at 5:36 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.8.
