Significant 5.3 quake hits near Mitilini, Lesbos, North Aegean, Greece

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake near Mitilini, Lesbos, North Aegean, Greece, was reported only 3 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 3.80 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Tuesday, January 21st, 2025, at 10:38 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Edremit (pop. 40,800) located 66 km from the epicenter, perugamon (pop. 57,200) 79 km away, Aliağa (pop. 44,900) 85 km away, and Canakkale (pop. 87,800) 88 km away.
