Moderate magnitude 4.8 earthquake 29 km northeast of Oia, Greece A magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Oia, Cyclades, South Aegean, Greece, was reported only 26 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter early morning on Saturday, February 8th, 2025, at 3:52 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.6, The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.3, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) at magnitude 4.5, the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 4.5, The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.6, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.5, The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.5, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.6, and The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Monolithos (pop. 180) located 24 km from the epicenter, Fira (pop. 2,400) 27 km away, and Messaria (pop. 1,200) 27 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Oia (pop. 3,400) located 29 km from the epicenter, Emporeio (pop. 1,900) 31 km away, Ios (pop. 2,000) 40 km away, Naxos (pop. 7,100) 66 km away, and Paros (pop. 5,300) 75 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
