Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.3 just reported 34 km northeast of Koronadal, Philippines A shallow magnitude 5.3 earthquake was reported in the morning near Koronadal, South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines. According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Tuesday, March 4th, 2025, at 9:42 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Columbio (pop. 5,500) located 14 km from the epicenter, and Magsaysay (pop. 16,600) 15 km away. In Bansalan (pop. 21,400) located 18 km from the epicenter, Kidapawan (pop. 79,700) 32 km away, Digos (pop. 116,100) 33 km away, Koronadal (pop. 125,500) 34 km away, Tacurong City (pop. 54,600) 42 km away, and Banga (pop. 58,900) 45 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Davao City (pop. 1,776,900) located 73 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
