Magnitude 5.3 earthquake strikes near Tena, Napo, Ecuador A magnitude 5.3 earthquake near Tena, Napo, Ecuador, was reported only 16 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 184.55 km beneath the epicenter after midnight on Saturday, March 8th, 2025, at 12:37 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.3, the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) at magnitude 4.4, The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) at magnitude 4.4, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tena (pop. 17,200) located 45 km from the epicenter, Archidona (pop. 7,300) 51 km away, Boca Suno (pop. 20,300) 73 km away, Puerto Francisco de Orellana (pop. 48,100) 104 km away, Ambato (pop. 387,300) 124 km away, and Latacunga (pop. 205,600) 129 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
