Magnitude 5.9 earthquake strikes near Pozo Almonte, Provincia del Tamarugal, Tarapaca, Chile An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 occurred only 4 minutes ago 73 km east of Pozo Almonte, Chile, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 90. km beneath the epicenter near Pozo Almonte, Provincia del Tamarugal, Tarapaca, Chile, early evening on Tuesday, March 25th, 2025, at 7:55 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Mamiña (pop. 320) located 25 km from the epicenter, Pica (pop. 9,300) 36 km away, Pozo Almonte (pop. 15,700) 73 km away, and Huara (pop. 2,700) 77 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Alto Hospicio (pop. 108,400) located 106 km from the epicenter, Iquique (pop. 191,500) 111 km away, and Iquique (pop. 191,500) 111 km away.
