Small tremor of magnitude 2.9 just reported 23 km northeast of Paphos, Cyprus A very shallow magnitude 2.9 earthquake was reported in the morning near Paphos, Cyprus. According to the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, the quake hit on Tuesday, April 1st, 2025, at 7:17 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Kelokedara (pop. 190) located 2 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Konia (pop. 2,200) located 19 km from the epicenter, Geroskipou (pop. 8,400) 21 km away, Emba (pop. 5,500) 22 km away, Paphos (pop. 36,000) 23 km away, and Chlorakas (pop. 6,400) 24 km away. In Kato Polemidia (pop. 23,200, 34 km away), Limassol (pop. 154,000, 38 km away), and Germasogeia (pop. 17,300, 40 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
