Small magnitude 3.1 earthquake 33 miles southwest of Goondiwindi, New South Wales, Australia

Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) reported a magnitude 3.1 quake in Australia near Goondiwindi, Queensland, only 21 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2025, at 11:06 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5.9 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.2.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include North Star (pop. 240) located 14 miles from the epicenter. In Boggabilla (pop. 980, 30 miles away), Goondiwindi (pop. 6,600, 33 miles away), Moree (pop. 9,800, 37 miles away), and Warialda (pop. 1,600, 44 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
