Small magnitude 2.8 quake hits 36 miles northwest of Merredin, Western Australia, Australia in the afternoon

Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) reported a magnitude 2.8 quake in Australia near Merredin, Western Australia, only 24 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the afternoon on Thursday, July 17th, 2025, at 4:18 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 4.2 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 2.8 earthquake as well.
