Significant 5.8 quake hits near Jutiapa, Municipio de Jutiapa, Departamento de Jutiapa, Guatemala

A shallow magnitude 5.8 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Jutiapa, Municipio de Jutiapa, Departamento de Jutiapa, Guatemala.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Tuesday, July 29th, 2025, at 3:21 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.9. A third agency, The Colombian Geological Service (SGC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure.

In San Salvador (pop. 526,000) located 79 km from the epicenter, Guatemala City (pop. 994,900) 100 km away, and Villa Nueva (pop. 618,400) 102 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
