Small 3.1 quake hits near Fort William, Highland, Scotland, United Kingdom An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred in the afternoon on Friday, August 1st, 2025, at 5:45 pm local time near Fort William, Highland, Scotland, United Kingdom, as reported by the British Geological Survey (BGS).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 8. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Munerigie (pop. 10) located 21 km from the epicenter, Caol (pop. 3,200) 27 km away, and Fort William (pop. 5,800) 29 km away. In Drumnadrochit (pop. 1,100, 52 km away), Inverness (pop. 47,800, 74 km away), Dingwall (pop. 5,500, 74 km away), Oban (pop. 8,500, 75 km away), and Westhill (pop. 5,400, 77 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
