Small 3.1 quake hits near Horsham, Victoria, AustraliaA very shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Horsham, Victoria, Australia. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Sunday, August 3rd, 2025, at 3:30 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 1.9 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Douglas (pop. 57) located 7 miles from the epicenter. In Casterton (pop. 1,600, 36 miles away), Horsham (pop. 14,200, 39 miles away), and Hamilton (pop. 9,700, 45 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
