Significant magnitude 5.1 earthquake 80 km east of Mito, Japan

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.1 quake in Japan near Mito, Mito Shi, Ibaraki, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Thursday, August 14th, 2025, at 4:13 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.4, and Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 5.5.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hitachi (pop. 174,500) located 65 km from the epicenter, Kitaibaraki (pop. 41,800) 68 km away, Hitachi-Naka (pop. 156,600) 72 km away, Katsuta (pop. 156,000) 72 km away, Inada (pop. 53,500) 74 km away, Kashima-shi (pop. 67,000) 79 km away, Mito (pop. 270,700) 80 km away, and Kamisu (pop. 95,500) 83 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
