Small 3.7 quake hits near Atascadero, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred only 4 minutes ago 5 miles southwest of Atascadero, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 4.2 miles beneath the epicenter near Atascadero, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA, early evening on Saturday, September 13th, 2025, at 7:50 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.7 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Atascadero (pop. 29,800) located 5 miles from the epicenter, Morro Bay (pop. 10,600) 9 miles away, Los Osos (pop. 14,300) 11 miles away, San Luis Obispo (pop. 47,300) 11 miles away, and Paso Robles (pop. 27,200) 13 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Arroyo Grande (pop. 18,100) located 23 miles from the epicenter, Nipomo (pop. 16,700) 31 miles away, and Santa Maria (pop. 105,100) 37 miles away.
