Moderate magnitude 4.5 quake hits 63 km west of Pyrgos, Greece early morning An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred early morning on Wednesday, October 1st, 2025, at 5:49 am local time near Pyrgos, Ilia Prefecture, West Greece, Greece, as reported by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.3, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.2, The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.2, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 3.9, and The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 4.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Agalas (pop. 320) located 4 km from the epicenter, Lithakia (pop. 1,300) 9 km away, Mouzaki (pop. 1,700) 9 km away, Ambelokipoi (pop. 1,600) 14 km away, and Zakynthos (pop. 11,500) 17 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Gastouni (pop. 8,100) located 49 km from the epicenter, Amaliada (pop. 16,800) 56 km away, and Pyrgos (pop. 22,400) 63 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pátrai (pop. 168,000) located 107 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
