Moderate magnitude 4.1 earthquake 39 km north of Gjirokaster, Albania An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred after midnight on Monday, October 20th, 2025, at 12:59 am local time near Gjirokaster, Bashkia Gjirokastër, Qarku i Gjirokastres, Albania, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 2.50 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.2, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.3, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.3, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 3.9, and The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 4.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Vokopolë (pop. 170) located 10 km from the epicenter, and Memaliaj (pop. 5,000) 11 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tepelene (pop. 12,000) located 15 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Gjirokaster (pop. 23,400) located 39 km from the epicenter, Patos Fshat (pop. 22,700) 44 km away, Patos (pop. 16,000) 48 km away, Lushnje (pop. 41,500) 66 km away, Pogradec (pop. 61,500) 73 km away, and Elbasan (pop. 100,900) 77 km away.
