Moderate magnitude 4.0 earthquake 16 miles southeast of Kokhanok, Alaska, United States

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.0 quake in the United States near Kokhanok, Lake and Peninsula, Alaska, only 3 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Sunday, November 23rd, 2025, at 11:30 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 1 mile. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Kokhanok (pop. 170, 16 miles away), and Newhalen (pop. 180, 34 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
