Significant 5.2 quake hits near Barishal, Hunza-Nagar District, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred early morning on Wednesday, January 7th, 2026, at 3:17 am local time near Barishal, Hunza-Nagar District, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.2, India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) at magnitude 4.5, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Barishal (pop. 2,000) located 104 km from the epicenter.
