Small magnitude 3.9 quake hits 18 km west of Dhekiajuli, India early evening

Just 14 minutes ago, a 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Dhekiajuli, Sonitpur, Assam, India. The tremor was recorded early evening on Thursday, January 8th, 2026, at 6:00 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface.
The event was filed by India's National Center for Seismology (NCS), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Dhekiajuli (pop. 21,600) located 18 km from the epicenter, Udalguri (pop. 15,900) 20 km away, and Kharupatia (pop. 18,600) 26 km away.
