Magnitude 5.3 earthquake strikes near Apia, Tuamasaga, Samoa A moderately shallow magnitude 5.3 earthquake was reported early evening near Apia, Tuamasaga, Samoa.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Tuesday, January 20th, 2026, at 6:38 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.2, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Taga (pop. 680) located 75 km from the epicenter, Gataivai (pop. 1,100) 79 km away, Mulifanua (pop. 4,500) 91 km away, Satapuala (pop. 1,400) 95 km away, Leulumoega (pop. 1,500) 97 km away, Nofoali`i (pop. 1,800) 97 km away, Fasito`outa (pop. 2,100) 99 km away, Asau (pop. 6,600) 106 km away, and Apia (pop. 40,400) 111 km away.
