Moderate magnitude 4.7 quake hits 55 miles east of Salt Lake City, Utah, United States in the morning An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred in the morning on Thursday, January 22nd, 2026, at 7:49 am local time near Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Samak (pop. 290) located 25 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Salt Lake City (pop. 215,500) located 55 miles from the epicenter, Millcreek (pop. 62,100) 55 miles away, Sandy (pop. 87,500) 57 miles away, Orem (pop. 94,500) 59 miles away, West Jordan (pop. 111,900) 60 miles away, Layton (pop. 74,100) 60 miles away, South Jordan (pop. 66,600) 60 miles away, Provo (pop. 115,200) 61 miles away, and West Valley City (pop. 136,200) 61 miles away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
